Community Garden/Landrace Seed Development Program
We strive to educate and encourage the development of community gardens in the areas we serve, teaching the importance of creating landrace seeds over time to preserve locally adapted genetics that make crops more resilient, diverse, and naturally suited to their environment, ensuring food stability for future generations.
Franciscans have long believed that caring for the earth is both a sacred responsibility and a practical act of Service. In that spirit, our Community Garden/Landrace Seed Development Program was created to help communities strengthen their food systems, deepen their relationship with the land, and preserve locally adapted seed genetics for future generations.
Why Community Gardens Matter
Across the regions we serve, many families face challenges related to food access, rising costs, and unstable supply chains. Community gardens offer a simple, powerful solution: neighbors growing food together, sharing knowledge, and building resilience from the ground up. These gardens become spaces of learning, nourishment, and connection—mirroring the Franciscan commitment to simplicity, stewardship, and community.
Our program promotes starting and maintaining community gardens that suit local climates and resources. We teach practical techniques for soil care, water conservation, seasonal planting, and long-term productivity. Everything we share is rooted in hands-on experience and a desire to help communities become more self-reliant. We rely on the generosity of our benefactors to help us acquire the tools, seeds, and essential materials that sustain our community garden and seed stewardship efforts, and we invite you to consider making a donation to support this work.
The Importance of Landrace Seed Development
Modern agriculture often depends on commercially bred seeds that are designed for uniformity, but not necessarily for local conditions. Over time, these seeds can struggle with drought, pests, soil variation, and extreme weather—issues growing more common each year.
Landrace seed development offers a different path. By saving seeds year after year from the plants that thrive in a specific region, gardeners naturally select genetics that are:
We teach communities the art and science of seed stewardship—how to grow diverse plant populations, observe useful traits, and save seeds properly for future use. Over time, these seeds become uniquely suited to the region, forming the backbone of local food security.
Strengthening Food Stability for Future Generations
Our mission is not only to meet the needs of today, but to build a foundation for tomorrow. By establishing Seed Libraries and Seed Banks with locally adapted seeds, we help preserve genetic diversity that might otherwise be lost in those specific regions. They help ensure that communities can remain fed even during periods of environmental stress or supply disruptions.
The Order of Franciscan Hermits is committed to fostering a deeper respect for creation—one garden, one seed, and one community at a time. Through education, collaboration, and thoughtful stewardship, we aim to cultivate a future where every community has the tools, knowledge, and locally adapted seeds needed to thrive.
We invite you to make a donation today... Together, we can grow something lasting.
