"The biggest draw to St. Francis Home will be the personal care, Schwartz said. A group of committed volunteers and staff members will care for residents in a home-style facility.

St. Francis Home will have three beds, Schwartz said. Although it may not seem like much, Schwartz said the average stay for a resident would be 28 days. So they will bring comfort to 36 residents over the course of a year, Schwartz said.

"Everyone is welcome and everyone will feel the love of a family in a home," Schwartz said"

"For nearly three years, Middlesex native Jeff Sved has been in and out of Bolivian prisons.

He's not a career criminal, but a volunteer in prison ministry with Franciscan Mission Service, a nonprofit that trains and supports lay Catholics for long-term and short-term overseas missions.

Sved, 26, recently extended his stay in Cochabamba, Bolivia, through the end of 2016."

One Joliet Franciscan reflects back on her road to ministry

9/26/2015

Picture
"JOLIET – Back in 1969, Sister MaryAnn Jerkofsky graduated from Baylor Medical School in Texas with a doctorate in virology.
She was fascinated with viruses, the way they reproduce and how they function in a body. That fascination led her to seek her degree, but the road back then was not an easy one.

In 1969, not many women sought a doctorate degree, and even fewer entered a male-dominated field of medicine and graduated from Baylor Medical School.

“Most of my career, I have been the only woman,” Jerkofsky said.

But Jerkofsky said as the years wore on, she noticed something that made her happy."

Franciscan Sisters: Expanding ministries, expanding education

9/26/2015

Picture
"As the Franciscan community began to grow, education for women was never in doubt. To understand the Franciscan Sisters’ priority on education, it may be helpful to highlight some key historical markers.Minnesota became a state in 1858. The population was 9,000, which didn’t include the vast number of Native Americans who were not part of the census. Women received the right to vote in 1920. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), meant to give women equal rights with men, was passed in 1923, but to this day never ratified by the required 38 states.

As the sisters considered requests to establish hospitals, homes for the aged and schools, education of the sisters was key. Sisters were sent far and wide for further education and training."

Partial to Home: The Lord's mysterious ways

9/16/2015

Picture
"In the mid-1980s, Clare Van Lent was happily working as a Franciscan sister in Dubuque, Iowa, when a bothersome idea entered her head: Mississippi.

"You'd think I'd come to Mississippi?' she says, still a bit incredulous 30 years later.

She traveled to the state and met with the bishop. They talked about the two Trappist monks in Noxubee County, who were ready to call it quits on their efforts to create a self-sustaining monastery on a 600-acre farm. The bishop offered little encouragement, but Van Lent thought she ought to have a look."

Franciscan sister enjoys second career

9/6/2015

Picture
"Sister Barbara Whelan, Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, taught school for nearly half a century.... before retiring three years ago at age 70.

Although many relish retirement, Sister Barbara found that there was more for her to do.

“I just believed at that time that I felt like I had to take time to make room in my life and heart for something new,” she said. “The hallway was very dark. I didn’t know where it was going to take me, but I also knew that I still had energy and I just had to step out and create another dream.”

Soon after her retirement, Sister Barbara began working at Lancaster Medical, located on Transit Road inLancaster, and finding a new way to direct her energy.

“I am meeting the patients and doing their vitals and preparing them for office visits,” she said. “It’s definitely out of my comfort zone.”

Sister Barbara finds her new line of work to be rewarding in many ways. When asked by patients why her work is not in a church setting, she responds that St. Francis preached the gospel wherever he was. She also finds that patients come into the office in varying states, sometimes facing major challenges in their lives. Working with such a variety of people has taught her a great deal about compassion and how each person’s life is capable of touching another’s."

Franciscan ministries began and thrived in Hurrle Hall

9/6/2015

"This stately, brick building constructed in 1891 was the first convent, housing the sisters and “some 15 old folks, 35 orphans and a hospital wing that cared for an average of 35 patients.”The public knows it as Hurrle Hall, but it wasn’t called that until July 12, 1978, when it was renamed after Sister Teresa Hurrle, who came to the convent as a young girl in the summer of 1894 and became a nurse."

The AFFI: consecrated life at the service of the poor

9/6/2015

Picture
"In the Year of Consecrated Life, the Indian Franciscans renew their commitment and service of apostolate among the marginalized of the country, in the slums, in rural areas, particularly among marginalized people.... The Franciscans renewed their commitment in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare". The plan, which will be carried out through the involvement of the Secular Franciscan and laity Order that follow the charism of the Poverello, provides specific commitments to help stop violence against women in society, to provide education to poor children, assistance, development and welfare for immigrants.

AFFI is the network of 53 Franciscan religious Congregations present in 163 provinces throughout the country. "
