BrotherPaul Ofh We pray for WORLD PEACE and that the Church be restored and United into One Body in Christ. For all of our World Leaders that they may be guided by the Lord and make ethical decisions to bring about World Peace and end hunger, all violence and terrorism, poverty and loss of innocent lives. For our Order of Franciscan Hermits Associates and Members, and for ALL Franciscans everywhere. In Love and Compassion for One Another, We pray that we can focus on what UNITES us as Franciscans and as Christians, rather than on what Divides us. We pray for those who are sick, homeless, imprisoned, have addictions, for victims of abuse and crimes, for martyrs of the faith, for all church leaders and for those who have no one to pray for them. Thank You Lord for All you have given us, Help us to share the Abundance You have given us with all of our Brothers and Sisters in need. Magdala Casey Prayers for understanding and peace. John Allen Green We pray for peace in our family: It is only in Truth based on our relationship with Jesus the Christ that our peace and joy are to be found. “I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn't like the peace that this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.” Jesus also clearly warned us about basing our peace and joy on relationships with others, even family. The crowd that was sitting around Jesus told him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside and want to see you." Jesus asked, "Who is my mother and who are my brothers?" Then he looked at the people sitting around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who obeys God is my brother or sister or mother." (Mk 3:32-35) I understand that this is a particularly hard injunction from Jesus for those who are spouses, parents and grandparents. It was my dear friend and mentor, the Jesuit father Ivan who advised me that when there is any discord and upheaval around you, to go back to the center and find your foundation on which you build your life and out of which you find your “being”. For me this is Jesus the Christ within, the Way, the Truth and the Life, and all my endeavors, work and efforts are based on striving to be a disciple and priest of the Christ in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi whose way of life was the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Based on this gospel we are first to judge ourselves so that from basis of truth we may “go out into the whole world and preach the gospel” and then admonish sinners to “repent and believe in the good news.” This foundation of my life can be particularly problematic and irritating for the inner circle of “blood family”, who find my way “preachy” or in conflict with their own lives. It was even so for St Francis of Assisi himself. I am truly grateful to you, Kenneth, Susan and Alta who have supported me in every way during my sickness and infirmity. The only way I can ever repay this is through my daily prayers and petitions in the offering of the Holy Mass for your intentions and the intentions of your families. Forgive me for quoting from my last homily to accuse ourselves first by which we seek the “untangling of knots”, forgiveness and mercy of a loving God and then for the forgiveness any that we may have harmed: This is the call to true repentance; a complete turn away from all self-righteousness that hides my anger, my pride and my arrogance with which I compare my honesty to their corruption, my gratitude to their selfishness, and my courage against their incompetence. Forgive me my sins, O Lord, forgive me my sins; the sins of my youth, the sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins I know, the sins I do not know; the sins I have concealed for so long, and which are now hidden from my memory. I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. I know my sins have wounded your Sacred Heart, the sins of my body; my idle sins, my serious voluntary sins; the sins of my vindictive indifference. O my Savior, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through your most bitter Passion, my Redeemer. Amen. Know that I wish you all every peace and good that you could desire for yourselves and ask your forgiveness for any stress, harm or bitterness that I may have caused you. I love you all and pray daily the apostolic blessing upon your lives. John Allen, the little Franciscan brother and penitent hermit. Today, we celebrate two memorials, firstly, the beatified Franciscan Blessed Bernard of Corleone, who, though beginning his life as a quarrelsome and violent youth, converted, devoting his life to God as a Capuchin monk who strove to become like Christ Crucified through heroic love and penance. We also commemorate the memorial of the Canadian Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, who suffered through many heartbreaking disappointments in her attempts to become a contemplative nun, eventually learning that "when God closes the door, He opens a window. She was sent to what is present day Montreal to open a school at a mission, and then from there, in her 70s, walked to Quebec to open another one there. It wasn't until 2 years before her death that she and her fellow sisters were recognized as a religious congregation. Even when we believe that we have the purest of intentions, God may have other plans for us. As our Blessed Mother, we must humbly submit, praying our fiat with our entire being, trusting in God's Providence. I learned this the hard way, as most lessons in life are learned, seeking Religious life for years, experiencing many tears and heartbreaks before surrendering to His Plans for me as a consecrated church hermit. Even after praying my fiat, it took time to realize exactly what He was asking of me. I am grateful for the gift of my vocation, and repent for those times I am negligent or stubbornly resisted my calling. I repent for those times that the pain of my illness has me crying out rather than joyfully thanking God for that blessing. Fiat, my Spouse!
