As Franciscan Hermits,
We Work and Pray to “Rebuild the Church” and Promote World Peace.
We Cherish Substantial Silence, Substantial Solitude, Prayer and Penance.
We Focus on what UNITES us as Franciscans and Christians, rather than what Divides us.

Inspiring faith communities with green energy

"If you visit the Franciscan Friars Conventual of Ellicott City, you’ll notice a large solar array standing in one of their fields. The friars have dramatically reduced their electricity bill, but that’s not the primary reason they invested in renewable energy. As Friar Michael Heine said, reducing their carbon footprint is “the right thing to do.”

"The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross are doing their part to keep the environment clean as well as provide another eco-friendly component to their immense natural landscape at the motherhouse with the use of solar energy. The 9-year-old facility sits on a hill off Bay Settlement Road overlooking the bay of Green Bay."We wanted a way, a concrete way, to show our Franciscan value of care for all of creation and also to continue the sustainability that we tried to incorporate in our building when we built on this spot," said Sister Rose Jochmann, who chaired the order's Renewable Energy Committee."

A FRANCISCAN PERSPECTIVE ON CLIMATE CHANGE - FRANK MAZZAGLIA

9/16/2015

NOTE: This article was written prior to the Pope's release of the Encyclical on the Environment "Laudato Si'

"St. Francis of Assisi may not have been an environmentalist in the modern sense of the word but there's a lot to be learned from his love for creation. For Francis, the love of creation was influenced by his love for the Creator. That's something to think about as Pope Francis appears likely to release an encyclical on climate change sometime this year much to the dismay of people who deny its very existence. For those who can remember when Christmas was cold and Easter was warm, however, there's enough evidence right there to know that something is certainly happening."
