In 1990, I was fortunate to visit San Giovanni Rotondo in the summer between my Postulancy and Novitiate years with the Capuchin Franciscans before Padre Pio was Beatified in 1999 and Canonized in 2002. So, even before he was even recognized officially by the Church for his sanctity, 22 years after his death, there were still HUNDREDS of Pilgrims who would go to visit the place he spent so many years healing the sick and hearing the confessions of the thousands of people who would make the journey to see him. It was quite an amazing experience to be there in person.
Although this movie is 3 hours and 22 minutes, it is well worth watching as I feel it gives a good insight into the life and suffering of Saint Padre Pio and will help you journey there in Spirit. It is best to watch the movie larger than below, so click the lower right corner with the 4 brackets to see it in full screen. This would be a GREAT movie to own... see the link below to buy from Amazon.com.
