Sumithra Y M Dear Confreres, Sisters, Friends, Thank you for the enormous love and concern for Fr. James Poonthuruthil. Please do continue prayin g for the speedy recovery of Fr. James. Fr. James is at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong where there is one of the best Neuro Surgery Dept in Northeast India. The doctors and the team have done a very quality and dedicated medical intervention of removing the blood clot from the brain (the intervention is named in medical vocabulary: decompressive craniectomy - related to the skull - with clot evacuation). They also placed an ICP monitor for constant monitoring of intracranial pressure on the brain. He has been responding to the interventions positively. Other external injuries like the fracture of the little finger on the right hand, injury on the face and other wounds are being attended to. The main concern is the brain injury. A portion of the brain is damaged and the entire brain has suffered trauma. As far as medical science is concerned, damaged portion of the brain can't be healed. There is no treatment for damaged brain. All effort is to arrest the bleeding in the brain and in the surroundings, which the medical team has succeeded well. A portion of the skull bone is removed and kept in the abdomen. The skull is bandaged. The brain area needs regular observation. The effort continues to reactivate the rest of the brain which has suffered trauma. Fr. James continues to be in unconscious stage since the time of the accident in the afternoon of Sunday 14th Jan 2018. The coma situation is partly medically induced for not causing any agitation or irritation which can further damage the brain. The expression of the medical team yesterday (Thursday 18th Jan) is this: Fr. James is not critical, but not yet out of danger. There are many hurdles to overcome. The possibility of any infection is also a major concern. He moves his legs and hands, but in the opinion of the doctors it is involuntary; he is not obeying any commands; which indicates that the brain is not responding. It is to be kept in mind that any injury of the brain takes time ... at times long time ... for healing .. and damage to brain is irreversible (medically). Hence, according to the medical opinion, in the event of gradual recovery which will take months, Fr. James will not have the full capacity of functioning as a healthy person; but God's grace is more powerful than the medical sciences. We trust in Him. We are in constant contact with the family members of Fr.James. Fr. Shijy MSFS, the Parish Priest of Hamren (Karbi Anglong), is the younger brother of Fr.James. His nephew, Mr. Shaji is at New Bongaigaon. They have visited Fr. James at the hospital. This evening the sister and brother of Fr. James will be reaching Shillong. We assure them that we are very much with them and do everything possible to give the best of treatment for Fr. James. We are in discussion with the hospital team and others on the need and the possibility of shifting Fr. James to elsewhere for further medical attention. We hope to arrive at a well informed and well discerned decision in a day or two. There are serious concerns in such a decision. We are looking into all the possible angles of such a decision. Dear Confreres, sisters and friends ....God can do miracle ... He does it ... we surrender Fr. James into the loving, healing arms of the Lord through the maternal intervention of Mary our Mother. Please do continue praying for Fr. James. We do appreciate your concern and solidarity. May I request those of you who spread / circulate pictures and news about Fr. James (I know it is out of good will and concern, but lacking discretion), please refrain from doing it. It is true that the accident is real and the pictures are real; but it is no charity and common sense to spread such disturbing pictures. Please spread only the messages and the news that I, as Provincial, put into communication. Appreciate your eagerness to visit Fr. James at the hospital. But due to the seriousness of the case and fearing infection, visitors are not permitted to enter the CCU. There are always confreres outside the CCU attending on Fr. James. If you visit the hospital you can meet them and not Fr. James in the CCU. Please respect this instruction till I can communicate to you otherwise. Fr. Nestor Guria (Provincial of Dimapur) is in Shillong. Fr. VM Thomas (Provincial of Guwahati) is in constant contact. We meet with the confreres of Sacred Heart College. We share and discern what is best course of action for Fr. James taking into consideration professional input from the medical teams at various hospitals. Please share this communication with others. Our prayers are with you dear Fr. James ... get well soon! Affectionately, Fr. George Maliekal (INS SDB Provincial) 19.1.2018 Peter Dion We pray : Jesus, I trust in You.
